Review:
In a time of economic constraint the instinct may be to scale back. Not the case with the inspiration behind the Vidal Sassoon team’s newest collection titled Le Basier. With high-end couture of the late 40s and early 50s as an inspiration, Mark Hayes, international creative director, says, “I thought it would be interesting to juxtapose the historical look that’s become very fashionable against the new techniques in cutting and colouring.”
Reading up on the world of couture, clicking through Richard Avedon photos and visiting the Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) exhibition in San Francisco, it struck Hayes that the restrained elegance of this time period would be the perfect contrast to Sassoon’s previous glam rock-themed collection Laser.
The result is a collection that partners the classic Sassoon geometric style with the very set, dressed up hair of the 40s and 50s. The colour scheme is YSL’s favourite combination of pink and orange and the technique used was Pique (a couture term for repeating patterns in fabric), incorporated through interlocking triangles and squares. Hayes sums up the overall mood of this collection in two simple words, “Effortlessly sophisticated.”
