Offspring Looks to the Future

By Morella Aguirre

The future of our industry is on everyone’s mind. And events like Contessa Unplugged and Offspring—the professional beauty industry’s first carbon neutral event recently taking place in Miami—are offering forums for discussion and valuable ideas on where the salon business going.

One person involved both these ground breaking events is Ray Civello, a creative consultant for Aveda and founder and president of Civello Salon-Spa Group and Collega International, the national distributor for Aveda products in Canada.

Civello, along side other master stylists like Antoinette Beenders, Tim Hartley and Vivienne Mackinder headlined Offspring show, a two-day event which directly addressed an important question in today’s hairstyling world: who are our industry’s leaders of tomorrow?

By giving these globally renowned hair artists the opportunity to introduce their handpicked protégés to a crowd of over 1000 attendees, Offspring offered an authoritative glimpse into the future, presenting the next generation of artistic leaders. Moreover, the event educated the audience on creative and technical excellence and the importance of having a good mentor.

“To have a great mentor…It’s something that never leaves you and can have an effect on everything you do,” said Antoinette Beenders, global creative director of Aveda.

Tim Hartley, former international creative director for Vidal Sassoon and one of the world’s finest hairstylists, unveiled his new collection at the event. Although he did not present an offspring, Hartley did share some of his signature techniques and inspired the crowd with his story and model demonstrations.

Presented by Aveda distributors Neill Corporation and The Salon People, Offspring was also the industry’s fist carbon neutral event. Organizers ensured the amount of carbon being emitted through all energy use in preparation for and during the show was accurately calculated and plan to have it offset through Neill Corporation’s Building Bridges program in Hainan, China, a project which supports rural mountain villagers to switch to locally sourced, renewable energy systems that reduce pollution.

So here’s the big list. Click on the links below to read more about Offspring presenters the stylists they believe will be the leaders of tomorrow.
