Beauty for Haiti: the industry's fundraising efforts
A list of Canadian salon, manufacturer and distributor contributions to Haiti relief

Jan. 29, 2010- On Jan. 12, 2010 a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the small Caribbean nation of Haiti. The International Red Cross estimates three million people were affected. The death toll is estimated to be 200,000. Individuals and communities around the world have responded generously to Haitian relief efforts, and Salon Magazine wanted to recognize what our industry is doing to give back. Below is a list, that we will continue to add to, of Canadian salons and companies raising funds for Haiti. We hope this will serve as both inspiration to the beauty community, and a guide to how you can help as well.

Aura Hair Group
This Manitoba and British Columbia-based 12-salon chain donated $1 from each haircut on Jan. 30. Various items donated by Passion Beauty Supply will also be sold and donated in full along with donations taken in salon.

Henkel/Schwarzkopf Professional
Henkel has donated 20,000 Euros ($30,00US) via the Henkel Friendship Initiative to aid an organization in Germany. The money is designated for the support of the non-profit association International Search and Rescue (ISAR) which has sent trained teams to Haiti to help. As the situation stabilizes and organizations have the infrastructure to warehouse and distribute items, Henkel plans to donate product.

Silver Scissors & Emerald Spa
Staff from the Corner Brook, NL salon and spa gave up their tips for a day and encouraged clients to donate. They collected $500.

Blonde Salon
Stylists of this busy Toronto salon hosted a complimentary treatment and blow dry night on Jan. 27 and donated $300 worth of tips to Haiti relief.

Head Organics
Head Organics participated in a silent auction put on by blogger This Mama Rocks. A dozen nine-product sets of Head Organic products were donated.

AG Hair Cosmetics
Within a few days after the earthquake, employees of the Canadian hair care company made contributions for Haitian relief.

Beauty Systems Group
This Ontario distributor donated Tim Horton’s treats and invited not only BSG employees, but the entire office building to purchase the treats for $1 each. BSG also held raffles and a PJ day where employees donated to work in their comfy clothes.

Blo Bar
Contessa winner and manager of Toronto’s Blo Bar, Jessica Ellison, is using her award winnings ($500 US from CND) to purchase and assemble "Heart for Haiti" kits containing CND Almond Hydrating Lotion, Solar Oil and CND enamel Bloodline. Kits will be sold leading up to Valentine’s Day, and the profits from this, as well as a portion of Feb. 14 sales will be donated.

Chatters
Stylists from Chatters salons across Canada are doing their part. A Thunder Bay, ON location aims to raise $5,000 before Feb. 10 for the Salvation Army. A group of franchise-owned salons in BC and Regina are donating $2 from every haircut to the Haitian Relief Fund, and stylists from Chatters St. John’s are donating their tips from Jan. 18 to Jan. 29.
Comox Valley hairstylists
Stylists from this Vancouver Island community are coming together to host a cut-a-thon on Feb. 6 at a local beauty school. Salons will also be donating gift baskets to other community events to generate funds.

Creekside Salon
Donations will be collected at this Roberts Creek, BC salon. The team also helped promote a local community music event/auction for Haiti held on Jan. 27.

Hedkandi Salons
Twenty stylists from two locations of this Calgary salon hope to raise $5, 000 on Feb. 20 from a night of $40 haircuts. 100 per cent of the money raised will be donated.

INI Hair Design
This Toronto salon will be donating proceeds from the sales of hand and nail "care packages", a percentage of profits from Valentine's weekend services and retail sales, and collections from a Red Cross bucket.

Katana Shears
From now until March 31, 2010, $10 from the purchase of every scissor will be donated to support relief efforts in Haiti.

L'Oréal Canada
In keeping with the Canadian Government's initiative to match dollar for dollar donations, L'Oréal Canada will do the same for every donation made on the part of its employees up until Feb 15, 2010.

Marca College
The Saskatoon campus of MC College will donate their time on Sunday, Jan. 31 providing hair and esthetics services. The proceeds from this day of pampering will be donated.

Megahair Family
The Megahair family of salons has donation boxes in each location. The company will match the donations it receives.
Recipient: Canadian Red Cross
Milady
Cengage Learning, Milady’s parent group is contributing $100, 000 to support Haitian relief efforts. The donations will be split equally between two organizations. The company also participates in a Matching Gifts Program that provides a dollar-for-dollar match for employee donations made to charitable organizations, up to $500 per employee, per fiscal year.

Nisim International
Twenty-five per cent of online sales for a one month period will be directed to an organization Nisim has worked with following the Boxing Day Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina. Nisim also plans to donate shampoo for ongoing relief efforts.

Pure Hair Inc.
A portion of Pure Hair Inc.’s January revenue will be donated to help Haitian children.

Saje Salon.Spa.Wellness
This Appleton, ON salon is contributing gift baskets to local fundraisers, as well as fundraising in-salon. The business will then match the total received by Valentine’s Day weekend.

Salon J Hair Studio
This Sidney, BC salon will be donating the profits of a cut-a-thon on Feb. 7, with a suggested donation of $25. They will also offer a variety of esthetics services.

The Lounge Hair Studio
The staff at this busy Vancouver salon sent out e-mail notifications and created promotional material for the salon advising customers that 10 per cent of retail sales will be donated to Haitian Relief.

Uvalux Tanning & Support is directing their funds to help Haitian orphans.
