Rules and Regulations

Who can enter?

The competition is open to every bona fide, working member of a Canadian professional beauty salon, including freelancers to the industry and salon owners. Elite Master Hairstylist of the Year is by nomination only.

How are the entries judged?

Judging is performed by independent professional beauty industry experts and beauty editors. Shown by number and category only, each entrant’s work remains anonymous. Judges score each entry on a point system relating to originality, creativity, fashion appeal, model suitability, technical execution, photography, makeup, wardrobe and overall concept. Scrutineers will review entries to ensure individual compliance with the rules and regulations. The spirit and intent of this competition is to showcase the work of hairstylists, artists and technicians. Major photographic or digital manipulation is discouraged (except for Avant Garde and Session Hairstylist of the Year). Based on the judging panel’s opinion, submissions that appear to have extreme digital manipulation will receive demerit points.

Where can photographers be found?

RULES AND REGULATIONS

Please review and follow all rules and regulations to ensure your entry is complete.

01. The competition is open to every bona fide, working member of a Canadian professional beauty salon, including freelancers to the industry and salon owners.

02. Competitors may enter one or more of the 22 Contessa categories (24 including Community Service and Business Excellence) but each category may only be entered once annually.

03. Each model may only appear once per category. For example, if the category requires three images, three different models must be used. The only exception to this rule is the Session Hairstylist of the Year, Student/Apprentice Hairstylist of the Year and both Nails categories, where the same model can be used but with three different looks.

04. Creative work may not be entered twice in the same category. Creative work may not be shared by entrants in any category except for the following categories: Canadian Salon Team, Master Colourist, Makeover Colourist, Texture Hairstylist and Makeup Artist. All participating stylists must credit their names and function per entry accordingly (i.e. Hairstylist: John Doe; Colour Technician: Mary Smith; Texture Technician: Paul Jones).

05. To ensure fair competition, extreme digital manipulation is discouraged and judging points will be deducted accordingly, except for Avant Garde Hairstylist of the Year and Session Hairstylist of the Year categories.

06. After winning any category twice (with the exception of Canadian Salon Team of the Year, Session Hairstylist of the Year, Makeup Artist of the Year, Nail Enhancement Artist of the Year or Nail Art Technician of the Year), competitors are not eligible to enter that category for one year.

07. Submissions must be in digital format on CD. All images must be shot vertically (if entering the category Salon Interior Design, horizontal images/shots are permitted). See Technical Specifications. Elaborate packaging is discouraged and is not scored. Images will not be returned—please make your own duplicates before entering the competition.

08. Contessa submissions may not be entered into any similar national, photography-based award event unless it is held in conjunction with Salon Communications Inc., until the results of The 21st Annual Canadian Hairstylist of the Year Awards are announced at the gala awards ceremony. This rule will be enforced, and awards will be revoked if broken. For further information call 416.869.3131.

09. Contessa submissions may not be work previously used or photographed for commercial purposes (ie. advertising campaigns) except in the Session Hairstylist of the Year Category. For further information call 416.869.3131.

10. Entry to the competition deems entrants have read, accepted and agreed to abide by the rules set forth herein.

11. All entrants hereby grant The Canadian Hairstylist of the Year Awards all respective rights, titles and interests to the enclosed image submissions, including all applicable copyrights. The entrant further grants Salon Magazine, French and English editions, Elevate magazine, salon52.ca and Beautynet.com, permission to reproduce any and/or all submitted images in any way they deem reasonable, provided such use relates to this or any future Canadian Hairstylist of the Year Award event and any advertising, promotion or publicity associated herewith. By entering this competition, the entrant waives the right to make any claims against the judges of the competition, the sponsors, the organizers, or any group, which endorses the competition or assists in its conduct. The entrant understands the decision of the judges is final and that all images become the property of Salon Communications Inc. and The Canadian Hairstylist of the Year Awards without payment of any compensation and without restriction as to date, location or manner of use, provided such relates to this event in any way.

12. It is understood by entering this competition, the entrant has secured and has proof of release forms authorized by the photographer(s), makeup artist(s), model(s) and other parties of interest involved in the production of each submission. Please use the release on the following page.

13. Failure to comply with the rules and regulations as set out will result in point deduction for each infraction incurred and/or disqualification from the competition.
